ABOUT YLI
​The Youth Leadership Initiative is a HPL leadership program for school district students to strengthen self-awareness, recognize the impact of service learning, develop cross-cultural leadership skills, and to put skills learned into action in a multicultural and global community.

THE LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE

The Leadership Initiative will consist of modules designed to adhere to the following WASC Leadership Standards:
  1. Self Awareness: student is aware of their strengths and weaknesses and utilizes this knowledge to reach their potential
  2. Character: student takes responsibility for personal actions and acts ethically (i.e. demonstrates honesty, fairness, integrity)
  3. Goal Setting: student understands and participates in the process of setting, achieving, and evaluating goals
  4. Organization: student works with groups to plan & implement organized projects
  5. Communication: student effectively uses various mediums to communicate.
  6. Diversity: student is knowledgeable and respectful of diverse groups and protected classes.
  7. Decision-Making: student understands the process for decision-making.
  8. Group Process: student understands how individual differences affect group processes.
  9. Citizenship: student understands ways to positively contribute to national and global communities.
  10. ​Conflict Resolution: student understands and utilizes strategies for resolving conflicts.

MODULE 1
Module opens October 1st

MODULE 1: Vision and Goal Setting
Students will learn to effectively envision and declare what matters most to them in life – whether it be a passion for something within the school, extracurricular activities, community or your world. They will create a personal strategic plan for living leadership every day.

MODULE 2 : The Distinctions of Leadership 
Students will examine and practice the fine line between “inclusive” and “exclusive” leadership. Students will discover what enables the most significant members of our society to be the exceptional people they are and explore the intricacies of Vision, Integrity, Responsibility, Character, Commitment, and Empowerment. Students will discover what makes them distinct as a leader and harness your natural ability to lead and to make a difference for others!

MODULE 3:  Team building and Group Dynamics
Students will experience the impact of teamwork and see how extraordinary results can be accomplished by empowering everyone to work together.  These activities will challenge students to go beyond perceived boundaries, creatively solve problems, and build trust and community.
Students will explore and understand their ability to contribute in a meaningful way to the team they serve.  Students will discover how and why people act the way they do in different situations and develop powerful strategies for motivating others for the task at hand.




MODULE 4:  Negotiation and Conflict Resolution 
Students will explore the dynamics and learn the strategies of win-win negotiation and conflict resolution. Students will enhance their ability to handle high-stakes situations with greater ease.
